So you’re in Windhoek looking for a ride somewhere.
You’re not sure what they call this sort of thing in Namibia, so you google the different names for a taxi ride.
Herewith a list of the different names used for a taxi cab:
- Cab
- Taxi
- Hackney
- Carriage
- Hack
- Hackney carriage
- Hackney cab
- Yellow cab (commonly used in the United States)
- Black cab (commonly used in the United Kingdom)
- Minicab
- Private hire vehicle
- Livery cab
- Ride-hailing service
Many of these names are location-bound, as can be seen by the comments in brackets.
Some of the names are most definitely not used in Namibia.
For instance, if you ask for a hackney cab, people will probably frown, then laugh when you explain to them what you’re looking for is simply a taxi.
So maybe stick to calling it a cab, taxi, taxi cab, or ride-hailing service, and you should be fine.
Windhoek has many taxi options, so finding a ride shouldn’t be too hard.
Namibia has their own version of Uber (or Bolt) too, called Yango.
There’s another one called Lefa too, but it seems Yango is the most popular.
Enjoy your stay in Namibia!
